    I used to get a sore neck from exercise! I would love a good an work out with chest lifts but at the end I would often end up with a sore neck for a few day after.

I just thought getting a sore neck from exercise was normal.
⠀
It wasn’t until I went through my Pilates teacher training that I learnt proper alignment for my neck during chest lifts.
⠀
This was a game changer for me! Not only did I get a lot stronger in my neck as soon as I got my alignment right. I never got a sore neck again.
⠀
That’s right, I never got a sore neck again. I do more chest lifts and intense Pilates than ever before and I never get a sore neck from it.
⠀
Now, I love teaching other people to look after their necks during exercise. This means less setbacks due to injury and less downtime for recovery. Which means stronger, happier people 💪🏽

    Body image and exercise
There is plenty of talk about body image and food. But not a lot about how our body image can mess with our relationship to exercise.

I grew up wanting someone else’s body. I would drive myself hard at aerobics and jazzercise (yes jazzercise). But no matter how hard I pushed I never got the peach shape I wanted.

After a long journey of wanting to reshape my body I realised that my body is beautiful as it is. And what’s more it supports me to do all the things I love in life.

As a Pilates and movement teacher I hold space for people to set goals that honour what their bodies can do now and what they would like their bodies to be able to do.

    A friend and I went to a gym a long time ago and when the trainer asked what our fitness goals were she said “I want an ass like a porn star.” She is a funny woman 😂.

She was joking but kind of not at the same time. I’ve never forgotten it as a motivation for exercise. Many of us don’t want the body we have, we want a different body.

There is so much power in appreciating what our bodies do for us now. When we set goals that are about new activities we would like to do or things we would like to do with more ease we are focused on function not an ideal shape (which is rarely achievable).

When you are focused on function you can choose a workout and a teacher who can get you there. And you can easily measure your progress as you feel more ease of movement in your daily life.

    Do the words ‘boot camp’ or ‘gym’ make you want to run the other way?

You want to get strong! But the ‘go hard or go home’ approach doesn’t work for you.

It didn’t work for me either. I would push to hard to fast to keep up with the group, to please the teacher, to force my body to meet some outside expectation.
⠀
Then I would get sore, sometimes for days. Usually neck and shoulder pain that would lay me low.
⠀
Then I would hesitate to go back and push hard again and again. And that would be the end of my routine.
⠀

    How do you get where you want to go?

I’m not a fan of new year resolutions. They are promises without a plan.
⠀
My six year old loves mazes. When he strikes a tricky one he starts and the end and works his way back to the beginning to find his way through.
⠀
This is a great way to create the life you want. Start with how you want life to be, your ideal balance of life and work, your ideal schedule, a physical achievement (to pick up your child / grandchild or get up and down off the floor with ease).
⠀
Then work backwards to figure out how to make it happen.
⠀
Is it daily training you need? Is it a financial plan to shift your work routine? Do you need an accountability partner to work on your nutrition or exercise goals?
⠀
Yes it’s a bit more in depth than a resolution isn’t it? But stepping this out can really take you where you want to go.
⠀
And if you are feeling like. ‘Brigid I am in my midlife I don’t have big goals anymore I just want to have a healthy, happy life!’ . I have written a blog that will help you explore exactly what that means for you!
